Miley Cyrus: Growing up or paying back?

Tongue wagging, twerking, and a foam finger. Miley Cyrus managed to rock the entertainment world in a matter of 5 minutes. As everyone knows, Miley has been buzzing through the tabloids like never before. The teen star has gone from young and innocent to hollywood adult celebrity. But is that all she’s going for? In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar Magazine, Miley claimed that she “was an adult when [she] was supposed to be a kid. Now [she’s] an adult and [she’s] acting like a kid”. It seems like Miley is getting a little payback for her childhood celebrity days.

The media has blown up over the star simply doing what she wants to do. This makes me wonder, if she had never been on Disney channel, would this even be an issue? The VMA’s are known for controversial performances…Britney Spears dancing half-naked with a snake wrapped around her neck, Christina Aguilera and Britney kissing Madonna, Lady Gaga bearing nearly all, and Kanye’s show-stopping speech about Beyonce’s album. Is she really doing anything out of the ordinary?

Her famed father, Billy Ray Cyrus appeared on Piers Morgan Live claiming, “That’s still my Miley”. After canceling his initial interview with Piers the day after her VMA performance, he came back in full defense of her scandalous act. Cyrus claimed, “she’s an artist. She’s real”. He went on to state, “Miley’s smart enough to know that to come out of the shadows of ‘Hannah Montana,’ it really takes something extremely drastic”.

But was that ‘something drastic’ a show to the public, or was it a jab at her family, managers, and Disney? After her on-again off-again relationship with Liam Hemsworth, her parent’s divorce, and the pressures of Hollywood, it looks like Miley is taking the bull by the horns and showing everyone what she is made of. Morals and self-respect aside, she has achieved her goal of  “trying to take over the world”. Whether it is payback, or just her ‘coming of age’, she has the whole world wrapped around her finger, and right now, no one in Hollywood can say the same.
